Restoration, renovation and to develop an endowment for long term maintenance for Mini-Wakan and the shelter at Gull Point is expected to cost 1 million dollars.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF 2009

Conceived, organized and produced a major fund raising, musical event “Opry at the Sami” (1/09). Raised over $14,000.

Lobbied at the State Capitol for funding support for the Project. Personal meetings with Representative Mike May, Senators Gronstal, Kibbie and Johnson. Presentation made to the House, Natural Resources Committee.

Told the “Mini-Wakan Story” to numerous local civic groups.

Obtained approval from the State Historic Preservation Office’s Nomination Review Committee for placing the entire 12 ˝ acres of Mini-Wakan State Park on the National Register of Historic Places.

Organized the “75th Anniversary Party” as the official “kick-off” of local fundraising for the project. More than $20,000 pledged or donated thus far.

Obtained $100,000 through a Historic Site Preservation Grant.
Requested funding support from the Dickinson County Board of Supervisors.
Obtained support from local artists to produce original art of Mini-Wakan and other local sites for use in fund raising.

Obtained a commitment from the DNR for $500,000 through I-JOBS to assist in the Mini-Wakan Project.


Worked with Representative Mike May and Senator David Johnson to obtain a bill in support of the Mini-Wakan project (see Senate File 2004).

Obtained recognition by the Iowa Historic Preservation Alliance for Mini-Wakan to be acknowledged as one of the state's 2010 Most Endangered Properties.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Develop and implement mechanisms to market various forms of original art depicting Mini-Wakan and other local sites.

Provide increased focus on the Long-Term Maintenance Endowment to benefit Mini-Wakan and Gull Point Shelters.

Organize a volunteer, archeological survey of the site.
